How NDA Age Is Calculated: Course Start Date, Not Exam Date

UPSC counts your age on the day the course starts, not on exam day. Here is the formula and worked examples, including the boundary dates.

Many aspirants ask whether NDA age is counted on the application date, the exam date or the result date. It is none of these. Your age is counted on the day the course commences.

The formula

  1. Find the course start date. It is 1 January for NDA I and 1 July for NDA II, in the year after the exam.
  2. Earliest date of birth: go back 19 years 6 months from the course start date, then add one day.
  3. Latest date of birth: go back 16 years 6 months from the course start date.

For NDA I 2027 the course starts on 1 January 2028. Going back 19 years 6 months gives 1 July 2008, so the earliest eligible date of birth is 2 July 2008. Going back 16 years 6 months gives 1 July 2011, the latest eligible date of birth.

Worked examples for NDA I 2027

Date of birth Age on 1 January 2028 NDA I 2027
1 July 2008 19 years 6 months 0 days Not eligible
2 July 2008 19 years 5 months 30 days Eligible
15 August 2008 19 years 4 months 17 days Eligible
1 July 2011 16 years 6 months 0 days Eligible
2 July 2011 16 years 5 months 30 days Not eligible

The ages above are on the course start date of 1 January 2028. A candidate born on 1 July 2008 is exactly 19.5 years old on that day, and the rule requires being under 19.5 on the start date, which is why that date falls just outside the window.

Why the exam date does not matter

Selection takes most of a year. Written exam, SSB interview, medical examination and merit list all come before joining, so UPSC fixes one reference date, the day the course starts, and applies it to everyone. That is also why a candidate can be well under 19.5 on exam day and still be over the limit.

Common mistakes

  • Counting age on the exam date or the last date to apply.
  • Using a date of birth from a document other than the Class 10 certificate.
  • Assuming the boundary date itself is eligible. Both ends of the published window are inclusive, but the day outside it is not.

To avoid mistakes, enter your date of birth in the NDA age calculator and compare the result with the official notification.
